Nigel Rolfe (*1950 Isle of Wight, UK) lebt und arbeitet in Dublin. Seine Arbeit befasst sich mit soziopolitischen Fragen von Haben und Nicht-Haben sowie Konflikten in der Gesellschaft. Bevor der heute gängige Begriff ‚Performance‘ Einzug in den Diskurs erhielt, prägte er in den 1970er Jahren die Bezeichnung ‚Sculptures in Motion‘ (Skulpturen in Bewegung), um seinen Umgang mit Zeit und Material zu beschreiben.

Große Retrospektiven von Nigel Rolfes Werk wurden im Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin und im Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris gezeigt. Er war Teil der São Paulo, Busan, Venedig und Gwangju Biennalen und weltweit in internationalen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen vertreten. Rolfe war Professor an der Royal Academy of Arts in London und Dozent an verschiedene Universitäten in den USA und Europa sowie Gastprofessor an der Yale University.

In the 1970s, before the now commonly used term ‘performance’ entered the discourse, Rolfe coined the term ‘Sculptures in Motion’ to describe his use of time and material.

Major retrospectives of Nigel Rolfe's work were shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He was part of the São Paulo, Busan, Venice and Gwangju Biennials and was featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. EXBODIMENT entsteht in Kollaboration mit BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE. Das lebendige, 1981 gegründete Archiv für internationale Performancekunst versteht sich als Impulsgeber in die Gegenwart. Es enthält ca. 4.000 Dossiers zu Künstler*innen der Performance-, Theater- und Sound-Art, 10.000 Fachpublikationen, Videos und Fotos unterschiedlicher Formate, Performancerelikte und viele Regalmeter zu Netzwerken unterschiedlicher Kontinente.

Aufgrund der Kollaboration der Kunsthalle mit dem in Köln ansässigen Archiv finden alle Auftritte in zwei Städten statt. Zusätzlich zu den Terminen in Gießen sind Performances der eingeladenen Künstler*innen im Kulturbunker Köln-Mülheim zu sehen.

EXBODIMENT is a collaboration with BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE. Founded in 1981, this vibrant archive for international performance art is intended as a source of inspiration for the present. It contains approx. 4,000 dossiers on performance, theatre and sound artists, 10,000 specialist publications, videos and photos in various formats, relics of performances and many metres of shelf space devoted to networks across different continents.

As a result of the Kunsthalle’s collaboration with the Cologne-based archive, all performances will be held in two cities. In addition to the dates in Giessen, performances by the invited artists can also be seen at the Kulturbunker in Cologne-Mülheim.
